On the Table: Skillet Salisbury Steak

Okay, so this is literally the only way I've enjoyed Salisbury steak, but I know its not authentic. Gordon Ramsey would roll his eyes and storm off, not even wasting his breath with me. But, you know what?  I got a 9yr old and 37yr old to eat a solid meal and I got in on the table on a weeknight.

So take that Gordon.

Skillet Salisbury Steak

Meat mixture:
1 lb ground beef
3-4 tbsp of breadcrumbs (I actually used my oatmeal flour)
1 tbsp of ketchup
3-4 dashes of worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp onion powder (optional)
1 tbsp of oil
1 tbsp of butter

1 small onion sliced to make rings
4-6oz of fresh mushrooms sliced
2 cups of beef broth
4-6 dashes of worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp of ketchup
black pepper to taste
1 tbsp of cornstarch or flour to thicken gravy

  • Prepare meat mixture and form into thick hamburger patties. 1lb made four thick servings and one child portion.
  • In skillet melt oil and butter and partially cook patties until no pink is showing on the outside. Remove from skillet.
  • Using same skillet with the oil/butter and remnants of the patties, add the onions and mushrooms to cook.
  • Cook onions and mushrooms until soft and golden. (approximately 10minutes?)
  • Add in the beef broth, Worcestershire, ketchup and pepper. Set to medium and cover skillet to cook sauce (about 20minutes)
  • Re-add meat into sauce and cook for 10minutes (this adds moisture back into the patties)
  • Remove patties and set aside.
  • Make slurry with the cornstarch and a couple spoonfuls of the sauce. Add into skillet and stir thoroughly.
  • Once sauce starts to thicken, re-add in patties, cover and continue to cook for 5minutes then turn off burner.
  • Allow patties to set for about 10minutes in covered skillet with burner off before serving.

I served ours with some leftover red potatoes, but traditionally serve mashed potatoes with it and green salad.
